Audio-Reader provides free reading services for the blind and visually impaired. It also provides rewarding volunteer opportunities. The organization provides live and recorded broadcasts of current books, magazines, daily newspapers and other printed materials to promote independence and enhance the quality of life for the print-disabled.

Cost/fees/dues: No charge for counseling and information services.

Anyone can call or come in to the center to get immediate help with any concern, either through counseling or through referral to other helping services. The center provides a Phone A Friend line for younger children to call. Teenagers and adults can talk with staff for help with issues as intense as suicidal feelings or as common as feeling stressed. The center maintains extensive resource files about services available to people in Douglas County and nearby communities.

The center’s mission is “Our trained volunteers and staff provide personal assistance through counseling, education and information services that are readily available to people in need.”

The League of Women Voters works to educate voters about the political process and current issues at the local, state and national level. The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization encouraging the informed and active participation of citizens in government and influencing public policy through education and advocacy.

Saint John Evangelist Altar Society Group

Sertoma Club of Lawrence

Sertoma is an international service organization with its main focus in the area of communicative disorders. The word Sertoma is an acronym formed from the phrase SERvice TO MAnkind. The Lawrence club has been in existence since 1929. A long standing relationship with the Kansas University Schiefelbusch Speech and Hearing Department and Clinic form the core of our sponsorship efforts. The club also sponsors a Christmas party every year for children with communication challenges. Other projects include donating materials for the Watson Park gazebo and a Centennial Park shelter house. Providing flag poles at City Hall, at the Holcom Park Recreation Center, and at the Youth Sports Inc. ball fields is another example of the way the Lawrence Sertoma Club has supported our community. The club’s major fund-raiser is the annual Sertoma Barbecue Cook-off held in each May. All funds raised by the club’s activities are returned to the community.

Soroptimist International was founded in 1921 and the local club chartered in 1940. It is a volunteer service organization for women in business, management and the professions. The club focuses on economic and social development, education, environment, health, human rights/status of women and international goodwill and understanding. The major service project is the “Women’s Opportunity Awards.”
