City’s live music options abundant
In terms of venues, not much has changed in Lawrence during the past year.
But when you’re Lawrence, that’s a good thing, considering live music options are at an all-time peak for the city.
Sure there has been a name change (Coco Loco is now La Tasca, 943 Mass.), an ownership switch (The Granada, 1020 Mass.), a cosmetic remodeling (The Bottleneck, 737 N.H.), a restaurant now embracing bands (Paradise Cafe, 728 Mass.) and one that no longer does (EightOneFive — formerly Raoul’s Velvet Room, 815 Mass.). But for the most part, the dependable college town has remained committed to “Support(ing) Live Music!” like those ubiquitous local T-shirts proclaim.
So for those who need a little evening-on-the-town primer, here are some of the premier Lawrence venues:
Abe & Jake’s Landing
Address: 8 E. Sixth St.
Phone: 841-5855
Web site: www.abejakes.com
The building that houses the current business began its life in the 1880s as the Consolidated Barbed Wire Company. Now it contains two huge bars, a cozy pub (where you can smoke), a spacious patio looking out on the river, two huge bars, a fountain and a sculpture toad thing. Oh yeah, and there’s a mammoth stage that has seen the likes of Vanilla Ice, Color me Badd, John Mayer, Blues Traveler, The Roots and Tone Loc.
Bottleneck
Address: 737 N.H.
Phone: 842-5483
Web site: www.bottlenecklive.com
With a 350-capacity, the ‘Neck is big enough to get lost in the crowd but small enough to feel like you can hang out with the band. The bar’s interior underwent a facelift in January — a second tier now gives patrons a view of the stage and there’s new seating around the four pool tables.
Eighth Street Taproom
Address: 801 N.H.
Phone: 841-6918
A two-level bar with pool (free until 9 p.m.) and occasional live music, the Tap Room doesn’t stick out from the exterior but is cozy on the inside. All shows take place downstairs with a shimmering backdrop of silver sequins. Jazz drummer Don Mumford plays host to a pick-up band every Sunday night at 10 p.m. It’s also home to annual favorites such as Arthur Dodge’s “Slick Rhodes” Christmas show.
The Granada
Address: 1020 Mass.
Phone: 842-1390
Web site: www.thegranada.com
Built in the 1930s as a movie theater, the Granada’s official opening as a nightclub was in 1993. Noteworthy acts to have performed there include Kid Rock, Marilyn Manson, Smashing Pumpkins, Ben Folds, Flaming Lips, Weezer, Henry Rollins and many more. The once-swanky martini bar may be a past memory, but the live music remains.
The Jazzhaus
Address: 926 1/2 Mass.
Phone: 749-1387
Web site: www.jazzhaus.com
Boasting one of the most diverse music calendars in Lawrence, the Jazzhaus features bluegrass, funk, rock, jam bands and, yes, jazz. All shows are 21 and over, but if you’re underage you can always listen from out on the street. (And no, those silhouettes in the window aren’t really musicians.)
La Tasca
Address: 943 Mass.
Phone: 842-1414
Formerly known as “Coco Loco,” La Tasca is the town’s only Spanish tapas joint. The restaurant also doubles as a music venue. Home to “Neon” Thursdays (’80s dance party featuring DJ Konsept) and a monthly appearance from salsa favorites Son Venezuela, La Tasca provides plenty of opportunities to stuff yourself full of refried beans and dance them all out of your system.
Liberty Hall
Address: 644 Mass.
Phone: 749-1972
Web site: www.libertyhall.net
As a meeting house, an opera house, movie theater and music hall, Liberty Hall has been host to countless events throughout its 142-year history. Among the many bands that have played the theater are Iggy Pop, Devo and The Buzzcocks. Newer groups with extravagant stage shows such as Sigur Ros and Spiritualized have also chosen Liberty Hall for its vivid atmosphere and giant stage.
The Pool Room
Address: 925 Iowa
Phone: 749-5039
Web site: www.lawrencehiphop.com
The Pool Room can safely be called Lawrence’s home for hip-hop. If Sounds Good, Archetype, Approach, Close Encounters, CESCRU or any of the other Lawrence MCs and DJs that honed their skills beneath the 7-foot ceiling ever make it big, they can look back and say this is where it all began. If you’re looking for the best live hip-hop, look no further than Project Groove every Friday night.
The Replay Lounge
Address: 946 Mass.
Phone: 749-7676
Web site: www.replaylounge.com
The loveliest little hole in Larryville, The Replay Lounge is home to pinball, rock ‘n’ roll, $1.25 Pabst Blue Ribbons and a host of townies. You never know who you’ll run into: An old friend of Burroughs? A member of The Get Up Kids or The Anniversary? The Replay also has a heated beer garden open year round that’s great for escaping the smoke. Recent improvements now include an actual stage.
Stu’s Midtown Tavern
Address: 925 Iowa
Phone: 749-1666
Despite it strip-mall location, this is a great off-the-beaten-path joint that features quality blues and roots music every Friday and Saturday night from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Stu’s also is host to an open mic. And if all that sippin’ primes your doughnut dippin’ spirit, Muncher’s bakery is right next door and open late.
