Mike Zabel and his family are adding to their numbers.

Zabel, of Lawrence, was announced Wednesday night as the high bidder for "Chip off the Old Hawk," one of 30 Jayhawks on Parade statues on display in Lawrence.

Zabel made a bid of $7,653 to purchase the Jayhawk in an eBay online auction. The money goes to the United Way.

"Cool!" was the way Zabel's 9-year-old daughter, Lauren, described being a co-owner of the fiberglass Jayhawk.

Zabel, Lauren, wife Debbie, and son Matthew, 11, attended the Douglas County United Way Kickoff on Wednesday at the Dole Institute of Politics.

Now Zabel has to figure out how to move the Jayhawk from its location at 15th Street and Kasold Drive outside the offices of Coldwell Banker McGrew Real Estate.

"We'd like to keep it outside," said Zabel, about putting the Jayhawk on his property. "It's so pretty and people ought to be able to see it."
