Paralyzed resident reports robbery
Police are looking for a suspect in the robbery of a man who is paralyzed from the chest down.
The 39-year-old male victim said the robbery happened about 9:25 p.m. on Labor Day, as he was relaxing on his couch at home on New York Street. He said a man wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and a blue bandanna over his face walked into the house carrying a wooden club.
He moved as if he was going to hit the victim, then grabbed a satchel containing $2,500 in money orders and $2,000 cash, then left, the victim said. The satchel, which the victim always keeps beside him, also contained his Social Security card, checkbook, medication and an instruction card for what to do if he has problems with his implanted heart device.
The victim said he had no idea who the robber was, though he said it seemed clear the person had information that he was keeping valuables in the satchel.
“I’ve thought and I’ve thought and busted my head about it. I have no idea who it was,” said the victim, who lost the movement in his lower body and hands after a car accident in 1987.
A friend of the victim’s chased the man down the street, but he got away, the victim said.
Sgt. Mike Pattrick, a spokesman for the Lawrence Police Department, said police had received information in the case that might help them identify a suspect, but he wouldn’t elaborate.
