Drop-In Center seeks donation for bus tickets

The Community Drop-In Center is seeking donations to provide bus tickets to help Lawrence’s poor and homeless find jobs.

Donations are also needed to help the center’s clients obtain identification papers and sack lunches.

This year, the center has provided 510 bus tickets, 12 vouchers for gasoline, 31 vouchers to obtain birth certificates or state identification cards, and 584 sack lunches to people to find and maintain employment.

“These services are critical, as there are no other resources such as this available for those struggling to make their way off of the streets,” said Tami Clark the center’s director.

To donate, call 832-8864 or send money to the center, 214 W. 10th St.

$150,000 grant to KU targets MPA program

Kansas University will receive $150,000 to help targeted students enroll in the master of public administration program, officials with the U.S. Housing and Urban Development department have announced.

The KU grant was one of 19 grants from the department totaling $3 million to help low-income and minority graduate students work toward degrees in community planning and development.

The Community Development Work Study Program grants will supplement about 95 students’ tuition, travel and books during the next two years at the 19 sites.

Students in the KU program focus on local government management. The program has established work assignment agreements with the Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority, United Way of Wyandotte County and the Housing and Economic Development Financial Corp. of Kansas City, Mo.
