Awesome effort
To the editor:
I would like to take this opportunity to let your readers know about the broad impact volunteers had in Lawrence last weekend for Make A Difference Day.
On Friday, more than 100 students from Bishop Seabury Academy spent their morning cleaning Centennial Park and visiting the homes of 13 senior citizens and people with disabilities to help with raking, trimming bushes and trees and cleaning out rain gutters.
On Saturday, members of the Lawrence Board of Realtors volunteered in the homes of three senior citizens with painting and yard work. Local supporters of Howard Dean’s candidacy for president improved the play area at the Lawrence Arts Center preschool. Girl Scout Troop 697 beautified the yard of a disabled individual. Altrusa civic club helped with cleaning at Lawrence Public Library. The Youth Volunteer Council sorted clothing donations for the Social Service League. I suspect other quiet heroes we do not even know about were out doing good things for others, too.
These adult and youth volunteers exemplify the power of “ordinary” people to make the community a better place for everyone and to inspire giving in others. I ask your readers to please join me in thanking our community’s awesome volunteers!
