Firebirds lose another squeaker

Free State High’s soccer team suffered another one-goal setback Tuesday, losing 2-1 to Olathe North at FSHS.

“It’s another one-goal loss, and we clearly didn’t execute the things we needed to do to be successful,” Firebird coach Jason Pendleton said.

“I think it’s probably another example of how I haven’t done as good of a job as I’ve needed to throughout this season to prepare us to have success in games like this,” said Pendleton, whose squad dropped a 4-3 contest Monday at Olathe East.

While the Firebirds (6-7-2) found little offensive success Tuesday, neither did Olathe North, despite opportunities to turn the game into a blowout.

The Eagles had balls miss wide right and left, off the goal post and when Free State couldn’t clear from its goalie box.

“We’re pretty fortunate that they didn’t score more,” said senior Joel Angelone, who had a hat trick Monday and scored the Firebirds’ lone goal Tuesday.

Angelone had an opportunity to tie the game with 54 seconds left, but the ball was deflected out of bounds.

“I just couldn’t get it there,” Angelone said. “Some of it was that we weren’t mentally into it. But we just didn’t execute when we needed to.”

The Eagles (7-7-1) didn’t execute well, but they came up big at the right times.

Free State High's Reed Starks (9) fends off Olathe North's Corey Bailey. The Firebirds lost, 2-1, Tuesday at Free State.

In the 12th minute, Rex Wallace booted a 40-yard blast that sailed over the head of Free State goalie Aaron Williams.

Angelone tied it in the 25th minute, taking a deflected ball and firing it into the back of the net.

But O-North’s Corey Bailey scored with nearly 20 minutes to go, sending in a shot that beat a diving Williams.

Olathe North outshot Free State 9-2 in the first half and 16-3 for the game.

“Ultimately the responsibility lies with me, and I didn’t have them ready to play,” Pendleton said.

The Firebirds play host Thursday to Shawnee Mission Northwest.

Free State High's Dustin Nye, left, leaps for a header against Olathe North's Corey Bailey. Free State's Michael Gaus is at right. The Firebirds lost, 2-1, Tuesday at Free State.
