Emporia — Free State went 3-3 and Lawrence High 2-2 Saturday at the Emporia volleyball tournament.
The Firebirds were 3-1 in pool play, defeating Maize, 25-22, 18-25, 15-10; losing to Roeland Park Miege, 13-25, 20-25; defeating Shawnee Mission Northwest, 19-25, 25-19, 15-13; and defeating Topeka Seaman, 25-19, 25-20. In the semifinals, Free State lost to Washburn Rural, 25-19, 25-27, 15-11. FSHS lost the consolation final to Blue Valley West, 25-19, 25-19.
Lawrence High went 2-2 in pool play and failed to advance to the semifinals. Blue Valley West defeated Lawrence, 23-25, 25-15, 15-11, before the Lions defeated Emporia, 25-17, 25-23, and Topeka Highland Park, 25-15, 25-15. Washburn Rural then defeated LHS, 25-21, 25-9.
Free State's Jenny Heppert, Jamie Stanclilft and Kristin Baker were cited for strong play.
"We played great today," Free State coach Nancy Hopkins said. "We are coming on strong. This is a week before sub-state, and we are playing well right now."
The Firebirds (17-17) will travel to Tonganoxie for a quadrangular Tuesday. The Lions (12-21) will play host to Emporia, Leavenworth Immaculata and Topeka West in a quad Tuesday.
