Rain to hold off until Saturday

If you’re heading out to a local high school football game tonight, don’t let the clouds scare you away. In fact, you can leave your umbrella at home.

There is a chance for rain Saturday afternoon, but the stadium seats will remain dry tonight.

“That would be a safe assumption,” said Matt Jacobs, 6News meteorologist.

The morning fog and the low clouds hanging over the Lawrence area are remnants of Thursday’s storm system, Jacobs said.

“It dropped a lot of rain in south central Kansas. . . . We only had a tenth of an inch here. We barely got any, ” Jacobs said.

If you attend the Lawrence High/Shawnee Mission East game at Haskell Stadium or the Free State High/Olathe North game at Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium, you might take a jacket along, he said.

When the games begin (Free State at 7 p.m., LHS at 7:30 p.m.), the temperatures should be in the mid-60s, then drop a few degrees through the games, Jacobs said.

The temperature will continue to fall overnight to a low of 56 by Saturday morning.

Jacobs’ forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies Saturday morning, with a 50 percent chance of rain starting about noon.

Conditions are expected to be breezy Saturday afternoon, with the winds 10 to 20 mph from the northwest. Saturday’s high will be 68, with any rain ending by 6 p.m., Jacobs said.

“Sunday, it looks pretty nice, mostly sunny, with a high of 74,” he said. Sunday’s morning low will be 42.

Monday and Tuesday, a storm system is expected to take shape in the Central United States.

Lawrence has a 30 percent chance of getting rain from that system, but it could develop to the east, he said.
