LHS begins Homecoming celebration

The streets were bathed in red and white Thursday for Lawrence High School’s annual Homecoming parade.

Students from the St. John Campus of Lawrence Catholic Schools wave for candy from Lawrence High School football players perched atop a Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical truck during the LHS Homecoming parade. The parade started Thursday at South Park, traveled south on Massachusetts Street to 19th Street before heading west to the high school. LHS's Homecoming football game against Shawnee Mission East is at 7:30 p.m. today at Haskell Stadium.

More than 30 floats and entries, including a fire truck carrying the LHS football team, the 2003 Homecoming royalty in convertibles, and the Marching Lions band, paraded from South Park to LHS.

Elspeth Legler, LHS senior, cheered and threw candy to the crowd from the senior float, which was themed “Through the Decades” to help mark the school’s 50th anniversary.

Homecoming king candidate Jack Bell, a senior and member of the LHS football team, said he thought the parade added to school spirit, pumping students up for today’s game against Shawnee Mission East.

“The whole Homecoming process is really fun, but I’m really excited about the game because we’re supposed to win,” he said.

“The Homecoming parade is one of the high school traditions,” said first-year LHS principal Steve Nilhas. “It’s really nice and helps get all of the school spirit up.”
