Volunteers to work on Fall Day of Caring

Hundreds of volunteers representing eight area businesses and a church will spend time today helping United Way agencies.

This is the first year for United Way’s Fall Day of Caring to be revamped. In the past, the volunteer day was on a Saturday and drew volunteers from throughout the community. This year, that communitywide event will be in the spring, to coincide with National Volunteer Week, April 18-24.

The volunteers will be helping 13 organizations.

Kennel Club plans dog shows this weekend

The Lawrence Jayhawk Kennel Club will have a conformation dog show and obedience trial Saturday and Sunday at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

Each day will be a separate show. Shows start at 8 a.m. and will finish with the best-in-show judging in the mid-afternoon.

There also will be a St. Bernard specialty show at 5 p.m. today and Saturday, and a puppy spectacular show Saturday.

Admission and parking are free to the public. The conformation show will be in the new main building, and the obedience trial will be in Building 21.

KU law school revisits tribal law case

A landmark 1978 U.S. Supreme Court case involving tribal sovereignty and women’s rights will be reargued during a conference Saturday at the Kansas University law school.

The case, Santa Clara Pueblo v. Martinez, will be reargued at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Snell Courtroom, Room 201 Green Hall.

It is part of the two-day Tribal Law and Governance Conference.

The case challenged tribal law prohibiting tribal membership for children of women who marry outside the tribe.
