Scooter safety

To the editor:

“Free-spirited scooter fans love their ‘hip machines'” (Journal-World, Oct. 5).

Ah, yes. They are fun, but has anyone thought to inform the riders that:

1) Eye protection — not sunglasses, but actual “safety” type glasses — is required for rider and passenger in Kansas. I see far too many riders without eye protection, including Falestine Afani Ruzik.

2) In Kansas, helmets are required for individuals under 18; she’s 20, so she doesn’t have to wear one. But she should; I can tell her a couple of tales.

3) Common sense should be a requisite. I’ve even seen some riders without shoes!
