Falcons fend off Firebirds, 2-1
Olathe South's White tallies twice to overcome Free State's Ozorkiewicz's goal
Free State High senior soccer player Brian Ozorkiewicz and his teammates only could sit and talk about what went wrong Tuesday as the Firebirds fell, 2-1, to Olathe South at FSHS.
“We want that one back,” Ozorkiewicz said. “We had our scoring opportunities and didn’t convert. They did — and that was the difference.
“The ball just went their way today.”
Or at least the ball went the way of O-South’s Wes White’s foot.
The sophomore scored both of the Falcons’ goals, the second of which became the game-winner in the 62nd minute when he slapped a sloppy ball out of a huddle of players in the box that got past outstretched Firebird goalie Aaron Williams.
“This was kind of a game where we made our chances and they didn’t,” said White, whose Falcons improved to 9-3, while the Firebirds fell to 6-3-2.
While Williams had little chance at White’s second boot, he just misplayed the Falcons’ first score.
White hit a routine ball that went through the arms of Williams.
“I was kind of surprised at that one,” Free State coach Jason Pendleton said. “Especially because Aaron has been playing so well back there, and it was a routine shot.”

Free State senior Brian Ozorkiewicz (7) lunges for the ball against an Olathe South player. Ozorkiewicz scored the Firebirds' goal in a 2-1 loss Tuesday afternoon at Free State.
The Firebirds more than made up for the misplay when Ozorkiewicz fired a quick shot right while he was running left, tying the game before halftime.
Free State had an even better shot early in the game when senior Joel Angleone went one-on-one against O-South’s goalie, but got tangled up and taken to the ground.
Angleone also nailed a bending free kick late in the second half on which two or more Firebirds had point-blank angles to the goal, but they missed.
“We clearly didn’t execute on very close opportunities,” Pendleton said. “And it wasn’t as if their goals were great, but they made their shots.”
Falcon Anthony Guile almost connected on a 40-foot blast that just skipped over the top of the Free State goal midway through the second.
The Firebirds made a push late, but after Angelone’s bending ball, Ozorkiewicz had another quality shot that was swiped away with 10 minutes left.
“We really felt it was a game that we could win,” said Ozorkiewicz, whose team will have nearly a week off before the Firebirds play Monday at Shawnee Mission South.
“It’s very disappointing because we were right there, and had as good of shots as them or better,” Ozorkiewicz said, “but we didn’t make ours count.”
