Shelter official weary of continued vandalism
Hateful messages spray-painted on truck; domestic abuse-awareness materials taken
Maggie Beedles woke up Wednesday to find that someone had broken into her pickup truck, which is covered with liberal-leaning bumper-sticker slogans including, “If you want to wear fur, stop shaving” and “I’m so homophobic I can’t even touch myself.”
But the auto burglar wasn’t interested in Beedles’ cell phone or camping equipment. The only item taken from the unlocked truck, parked in her driveway on Kentucky Street, was a stack of anti-domestic violence fliers and posters.
Beedles also found the words “Die” and “Fag” spray painted on her truck’s hood, windshield and windows.
Beedles, who is bisexual, works as outreach coordinator for Women’s Transitional Care Services, a local shelter for abused women. Wednesday was the first day of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and she had planned to spend the day posting the material at public places throughout the region.
Instead, she spent the day scrubbing her windshield with turpentine and brushing turquoise paint onto the vandalized truck’s hood, to cover up the slur. She said it’s the fourth time someone has vandalized her truck in the past year– either by smashing windows or painting graffiti on it.
“I’m sick of it happening to me,” she said. “I know it happens to other people that don’t speak up about it. Nobody knows how much hate still exists.”
Beedles reported the vandalism and theft to police.
The printed materials, worth about $350, will be especially hard to replace this year, Beedles said. The shelter saw its budget cut by about 5 percent for the fiscal year that began July 1.
