Advice for mailing packages to soldiers

? If someone is looking to send a care package to a soldier, bigger isn’t always better, postal officials say.

Bob Windham, of Fort Riley’s postal service, said that people shipping packages overseas should follow U.S. Postal Service guidelines that encourage smaller packages which can go first class. Because of the distance, extra time for delivery to the war zone should be allowed, he said.

In addition, pieces of mail addressed to “A Soldier” will not be delivered, Windham said, because security concerns prevent mail going randomly to soldiers.

Windham said people wanting to send packages, letters or cards to soldiers should contact unit leaders for names, or go through any of a number of organizations, such as the USO, the Association of United States Army or AdoptaPlatoon.
