City Commission zips through agenda

The Lawrence City Commission had one of its fastest meetings ever Tuesday night — clocking in right at five minutes long.

Mayor David Dunfield proclaimed Friday as Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Kick-Off Day, then commissioners approved the consent agenda — its routine items — without comment.

Commissioner Sue Hack was absent, and her colleagues kept the agenda nearly empty.

KU literacy tutors conducting book drive

A Kansas University student group is collecting books for its tutoring efforts and for area children.

Students Tutoring for Literacy, which provides one-on-one assistance for people learning to read, will collect books through Dec. 5. They will be collected at the Center for Community Outreach office in the Kansas Union; Ecumenical Christian Ministries, 1204 Oread Ave.; St. Lawrence Catholic Center, 1631 Crescent Road; or Nunemaker Hall on campus. Children’s books are especially needed.

Some of the books will be kept for the student literacy tutoring program. Others will be distributed at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and area schools.
