Costly war

To the editor:

I had guarded skepticism and objection to the war in Iraq. Now, I am strongly opposed to those efforts. It is clear that this war is shameful and wrong. We are at war for the wrong reasons.

I have hesitated to write this letter, concerned primarily about the brave and dedicated members of our armed forces. They have sacrificed beyond fairness; but continued loss of life and suffering makes no sense.

Our country’s safety, welfare, and security are not improved. The war is, in fact, causing increased risk and harm to all Americans: 1) More Americans are going hungry; 2) Health care is denied to millions; 3) Corporate powers are robbing the American population by unconscionable acts, with limited repercussions; 4) Public schools are under funded, and children are at risk; 5) Social services are diminished; 6) Our constitutional rights are severely restricted; and 7) Hard-working citizens are unemployed with little hope.

Yet, President Bush is spending nearly $100 billion on a war with no purpose or resolution in sight. Just imagine the public good that could be achieved with these billions of dollars if properly used? Real security and protection will result when America is more democratic and our resources are used for the common good, health care and education. The deceptions of this war must be challenged; we must all seek justice, and demand noble uses of resources and power at this point in our country’s history and destiny.
