Agency: National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame

Contact person: Cathi or Jeanna, (913) 721-1075

The National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame in Bonner Springs needs volunteers for its Santa's Express holiday event Dec. 4-16. Volunteer positions include drivers for the miniature train, hay wagon drivers, "elves" to serve cookies and cocoa, and Santa and Mrs. Claus. Volunteers and visitors will enjoy hay wagon and train rides, decorated historic buildings and costumed historical and holiday characters while getting a hands-on learning experience of life in rural America since the nation's founding.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen needs volunteers for the community Thanksgiving dinner, which will be served Nov. 27 at First Christian Church, 211 W. 10th St. Volunteer drivers to deliver meals to the homebound are especially needed. LINK also needs volunteers to prepare food, serve and clean up. For more information or to sign up, call Terry Connolly at 865-3985.
  • The Salvation Army has many volunteer opportunities for the holiday season. Thanksgiving boxes need to be packed Thursday and Friday. Volunteers are needed to set up the Christmas Toy Shop from Dec. 8-12 and to staff at the Toy Shop Dec. 15-17. The Salvation Army will accept applications for volunteer bell ringers until Dec. 12. The Share The Warmth coat drive will accept donations at all Scotch Cleaners locations through Friday. For more information on Salvation Army programs, call 843-4188.
  • The Roger Hill Volunteer Center has published a brochure about how to help during the holidays, presenting many programs that rely on volunteers to make a difference in Douglas County. Community dinners, coat drives and "adopt a family" programs all work to make holiday seasons for those less fortunate warmer and brighter. To receive a copy of this brochure by mail or for other information about holiday volunteering, call 865-5030.
