Salvation Army needs seasonal volunteers

Salvation Army bell ringers hit the streets this weekend and will continue to collect donations through the holiday season. The kettle drive is the biggest funding source all year of the Salvation Army’s programs, said director Judy Forney.

To volunteer as a bell ringer, contact Rochelle Montgomery. To apply for a paid ringer position, turn in an application by Wednesday to Craig Wood at the office, 946 N.H.

Other holiday needs:

  • Coats can be donated at a Scotch Cleaners through Friday for the Share the Warmth program.
  • Staff the Christmas Toy Shop, a joint program with Toys for Tots. People are needed to sort items by age groups Dec. 8-12. Escorts are needed to help children choose toys and clothing Dec. 15-17.
  • Volunteer at the Holiday Banquet for the Homeless Dec. 3.
  • Visit a nursing home with the League of Mercy program during second weekend in December.
  • Serve at the Shelter Christmas Party on Dec. 24.

LMH plans fair to help smokers learn to quit

Lawrence Memorial Hospital is planning a Stop Smoking Fair as part of the Great American Smokeout.

The fair will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the hospital, 325 Maine. Its goal is to help smokers learn to quit.

The Great American Smokeout is an annual event sponsored by the American Cancer Society to encourage tobacco users to quit and raise awareness of effective ways to do so.

The hospital’s fair will include exhibits of resources and quitting techniques from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. A Lawrence physician and lung specialist, Dr. Charles Yockey, will speak from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. about quitting and smoke-free, healthier lifestyles.

Advanced registration is requested for Yockey’s presentation, but the fair is free. To register call ConnectCare, 749-5800.

Two killed, four injured in three-vehicle crash

Two men were killed and four people were injured in a three-vehicle crash in northeast Kansas, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

Kevin R. Armstrong, 20, of Paola, and Jeffrey C. Tryon, 20, of Waterville, were killed at 7:30 p.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 77, west of Randolph in Riley County, the patrol said.

The southbound car in which Armstrong was riding swerved onto the shoulder, overcorrected, crossed the center line and collided with Tryon’s vehicle. Armstrong’s car then went airborne and landed on a pickup.

The injured were hospitalized in Manhattan and at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.

The patrol was investigating the cause of the accident.

ECKAN dinner recognizes volunteers

East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corp. will have its 26th annual Fellowship Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ottawa High School, 1120 S. Ash St.

Board members and staff from nine counties will attend the program to acknowledge the year’s accomplishments and recognize volunteers and organizations that supported ECKAN and the Community Action Promise. The organization expects 250 people to attend.

Janet Schalansky, secretary of the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, will speak at the program.
