Housing break

To the editor:

I see the school board is toying with the idea of a housing subsidy for teachers. It seems that, with an average 2003-04 salary of $42,757, teachers in the Lawrence system just can’t afford the average price of $159,200 that houses fetch in Douglas County.

I’m sure it’s tough. But how about classified workers in the school system? With an average salary of $22,301, the cost of the same house must be really out of the question for clerical workers, custodians, nurses, food service workers, bus drivers and security personnel. Don’t those of the support staff deserve subsidies, as well?

And what about all the other hardworking folk in town who don’t make in excess of 40K? I don’t see anyone coming forward to give them a break.
