Nagging need

To the editor:

It’s good to read about our young people’s efforts, as this season of cold — and caring — approaches, to provide mittens and scarves, hats and socks, and knapsacks stuffed with supplies for winter. But we adults must be very clear that this does not absolve us of the most basic need of people who are homeless this season, the need for shelter.

Right now, the Coalition on Homeless Concerns is looking for a location, for staff and funds to provide a place out of the cold until our overnight shelters open late in the evening. This is a community project that still eludes — and requires — all of our efforts. Our young people have set an excellent example. They know just how cold even a few hours outdoors can be. And that then, it’s time to go home.
