Donated turkeys sought

The Salvation Army in Lawrence is looking for a lot of turkeys.

“We’ve had over 150 applications already” from needy families wanting holiday aid, said director Rich Forney. “We’re expecting over 200 families (to apply).”

Today is the beginning of more than six weeks of Salvation Army-sponsored charity drives. In addition to seeking turkeys and other food for Thanksgiving baskets, the organization is collecting new toys and clothes for the needy in Lawrence.

This year, the Salvation Army is helping coordinate donations and assistance for many of Lawrence’s relief agencies, in addition to the Army’s traditional programs.
