Shoplifting report leads to police chase

A car carrying three shoplifting suspects struck three vehicles Wednesday afternoon in downtown Lawrence as the trio tried to elude police.

About 3:30 p.m. police were notified of a shoplifting incident at The Buckle, 805 Mass.

An officer stopped the suspects’ car in the 1300 block of Massachusetts Street, Sgt. Mike Pattrick said. The suspects drove off as the officer was trying to talk to them, and police pursued.

The suspects’ car struck three other vehicles in the area of South Park and Massachusetts streets. The suspects then fled on foot.

One suspect was arrested by a Douglas County Sheriff’s officer in the 1300 block of Kentucky Street. A second suspect was caught by a Kansas University Public Safety officer at 12th and Indiana streets and the third suspect was found hiding under a garage at 200 W. 14th St.

No one was injured in the accident, police said.
