Nebraska apology

To the editor:

An open letter to Nebraska fans:

During your visit to Lawrence for the Nebraska-Kansas football game last weekend, a most serious and regrettable series of incidents occurred. I refer to the 25 cars bearing Nebraska license plates that had their tires slashed. Every serious resident of Lawrence regrets such criminal behavior. No doubt the perpetrators were few in number, and we ask that you not judge our community by their actions.

In our church school class Sunday, as we studied various kinds of evil and “ungrace” in our world, the tire slashing was brought up and discussed. We wondered what we could do as a group to minimize your inconvenience and perhaps your anger. Hence this letter. We know that we cannot apologize for the destructive acts of others. However, we did want you to know that we are sorry for what happened.

Even though your Husker football teams have dominated the Jayhawks for years, we still hope you will continue to visit Lawrence. You are certainly welcome.
