‘Memory Wall’s’ overflow photos to be on computer

More than 1,000 pictures of World War II veterans that didn’t fit in displays at the Dole Institute of Politics will soon be included in a new computerized exhibit.

All photographs not placed on “Memory Wall” panels when Kansas University’s Dole Institute was dedicated in July will be loaded into a database accessible by guests at the institute, on KU’s west campus.

Linda Kay Pritchard, assistant to the director of the Dole Institute, said this week that an interactive computer kiosk would be built to display donated pictures not already on two large panels hanging inside the institute.

Guests will be able to look up a veteran’s photo by name on the computer.

“People can touch a screen and see their loved ones,” Pritchard said.

Dole, the former Kansas senator and presidential candidate, made it clear during a recent visit to the institute named in his honor that far more than the 960 pictures displayed on interior walls should be available.

“He told me three times in the hour he was here that we really need to get more photos up,” Pritchard said.

She said it could be several months before the system was working.

The institute will accept photos of World War II veterans from Kansas to include on the computer, Pritchard said.

Photographs can be sent to Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics, Kansas University, c/o Memory Wall, 2350 Petefish Drive, Lawrence 66045.
