Where are they now?

Emily Loewen and Lacey Luina

Sport: Tennis

School/class: Free State High, 2003

In high school: Loewen and Luina joined forces and became one of the best doubles teams the city ever has seen. The two finished the 2002 season with a 31-2 record and a Kansas Class 6A doubles title, decisively winning the championship match, 6-2, 6-1.

Where are they now?: While finding their high school niches playing doubles, Loewen and Luina each have thrived in singles at the college level. Loewen, a freshman at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, went 11-4 in singles this fall, including a 9-2 dual record playing mostly at No. 4 or No. 5. Cornell, an NCAA Division III college, went 10-3 overall this fall.

Luina, meanwhile, helped lead Emporia State to a 7-2 fall record, going 9-4 in singles play. She fared well in the ITA North Central Regional tournament, reaching the quarterfinals of the 64-seed tourney before falling to the top seed.

Luina is one of two freshman on the Hornets’ squad.
