No treats

To the editor:

I am writing in response to the Journal-World’s article on Thursday about protecting Massachusetts Street from losing its local flavor and character. For the past five years, I have taken my children downtown on Halloween to trick-or-treat. This event has grown wildly popular in the past few years.

I would like to give my sincere thanks to all the local merchants who provide a safe, simple and interesting outing! They must spend hundreds of dollars on candy and staff time passing out treats. The west side of the 600 block of Massachusetts Street was frighteningly dark and empty. On the merchants’ doors were signs: “NO CANDY.” Explain that to a 6-year-old! The corporate chains did not support the parents, children or downtown community.
