Journal-World staff wins awards

Two employees at the Lawrence Journal-World were recognized at the 2003 Communications Contest May 2 in Manhattan. The contest was sponsored by Kansas Professional Communicators, formerly Kansas Press Women.

Ann Gardner, editorial page editor, received first and second place in the editorial category.

Mindie Paget, arts editor, received first and second place for feature story, third for reviews, honorable mention in page layout, first and third place in personality profile, first in history, second in news reporting daily, first in health writing and second in arts and entertainment.

Theater, film department honors students, alumni

Kansas University theater and film students and alumni were honored in separate ceremonies May 9 and May 16.

Brian Clinnin, a graduating senior from Arlington Heights, Ill., received the Kilty Kane award, University Theatre’s highest honor. It is given to someone who has contributed greatly to the theatre program and is leaving KU.

Terrence D. Jones, president and CEO of Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Va., received the department’s Alumni Honor Citation.

Library plans sessions for teen volunteers

The Lawrence Public Library will give information about its VolunTEEN program at 2 p.m. Tuesday and 7 p.m. Wednesday. The program is open to teens between ages 13 and 18.

Volunteers will work a two-hour shift per week during the summer shelving books and periodicals, assisting with summer reading programs, clerical work, cleaning and other tasks. Applications are available at the check-out desk or The Zone, the youth area of the library, and may be turned in at the informational meetings.
