Newsman signs up for Dole tribute

NBC's Tom Brokaw to attend dedication of KU institute

TV newsman Tom Brokaw has added his name to the list of participants at the Dole Institute of Politics dedication events this summer.

Brokaw, who wrote the best-selling book “The Greatest Generation,” will speak at the July 22 dedication of the building on Kansas University’s West Campus that will house papers from former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole’s political career. Dole, a longtime Republican senator from Kansas, attended KU.

Brokaw also will speak at the July 21 “Salute to Heroes” USO-style show and the “Legacy of Leadership” dinner, a fund-raiser where former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani will be presented the first Dole Prize for Leadership.

Brokaw, the “NBC Nightly News” anchor, also served as master of ceremonies for the 2000 opening of the National D-Day Museum in New Orleans. Brokaw wrote “The Greatest Generation” in 1998, the same year the American Legion gave him its top award for distinguished public service in the field of communications.

Brokaw followed his 1998 book with “The Greatest Generation Speaks,” published in 1999, which includes letters from readers and people born in the 1920s. A third book, “An Album of Memories,” that features family stories from World War II was published in 2001.

Former Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, Giuliani, former Dole presidential running mate Jack Kemp, former Sen. George McGovern and others have committed to attending the events.

The three days of events will revolve around World War II veteran reunions and the dedication of the Dole Institute building.

Events will kick off July 20 with a 10 a.m. church service on West Campus. At 2 p.m. that day, former faculty and Lawrence residents will reflect on the 1940s during “KU Goes to War.” “An Evening of Dancing with the Glenn Miller Orchestra” will begin at 7 p.m. July 20 at the Lawrence Holidome.

A 10 a.m. air parade featuring vintage aircraft will start events on July 21. The planes also will be featured in a static display throughout the three days at Lawrence Municipal Airport.

The highlight of that day will be the “Salute to Heroes: An Evening to Remember,” a USO-style show that begins at 8 p.m. at the Lied Center. Although tickets to the event are sold out, organizers plan to have a giant screen on West Campus for others to watch outside.

The building dedication is at 10:30 a.m. July 22, Dole’s 80th birthday.

Other ongoing events include a World War II military encampment, vehicle display and a Memory Tent, where veterans will share their stories.
