Volkswagen Bug Blitz set for weekend

With any luck, Lawrence will be infested with bugs over Memorial Day weekend.

Volkswagen bugs, that is.

The annual Bug Blitz/Bus Blast is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, and for the first year Lawrence will play host to the event.

Last year about 140 Volkswagen vehicles and more than 300 people traveled to Topeka for the show, which is sponsored by Mo-Kan Volkswagen Club. Club President Mike Kersten expects a similar turnout this year.

Camping, live music and a swap meet will also be featured at the car show and contest, which will be held at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

In addition, proceeds from a raffle will benefit Women’s Transitional Care Services. Last year the raffle raised $1,000 for The Children’s SPOT at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

A tentative schedule is found below. For more information and a list of fees, go to http://mokanvwclub.org/bugblitz.html
