Area student wins for environmental art
Madison Epp, a second-grader from Bonner Springs, was one of 13 students from across the state to have artwork selected for the 2004 Kansas Don’t Spoil It! calendar. Nearly 4,000 entries were received for the contest.
Students kindergarten through 12th grade submitted artwork that focused on preserving the environment. Winning selections will be put in the calendar, produced by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to promote recycling, reuse and waste reduction. Calendars will be distributed to schools, local governments and businesses this fall. To receive a calendar, call (800) 282-9790.
Stairway pulled away from building
An outside stairway to a second-floor office was pulled from its place sometime early Saturday in the alley behind 729-731 Mass., the building’s owner said.
Carol Francis, who owns the building and Francis Sporting Goods, 731 Mass., said she received a call from someone Saturday morning informing her the 12-step, wooden stairway had been pulled out of place. Francis said she found the stairs had been left in a parking space behind the building.
“Someone just ripped it out and dumped it,” Francis said.
The rear door to the office, which can be reached from the front of the building, has been locked, she said.
Francis said she called police and an officer responded, but a police report was not available Sunday night.
