Storm safety

To the editor:

Lawrence tornadoes taught us that some apartment and trailer home tenants have no basement or shelter to go to in a tornado. So, I think there should be a law requiring people who rent these places to have a basement or shelter for the renters’ safety. I think it should be part of the home safety code.

Parking is such a priority in this city — too many cars parked on lawns, etc. — but when it comes to lives and saving them, this gets ignored. No code is in place and no enforcement is done.

A suggestion for tornado victims: The grocery stores in the Lawrence area could give all their discontinued groceries and cleaning supplies to the victims, and it might be taken as a tax write-off. It would help both the giver and the receiver. The local Salvation Army and Red Cross could be called to pick up the items. Volunteers of these agencies could help.
