Budget: County to discuss aiding school nursing programs

With school nursing programs ailing under the threat of budget cuts, Douglas County commissioners will meet Monday to discuss political prospects of coming to the financial rescue.

Commissioner Charles Jones wants to inject an estimated $1 million of county tax revenues into area school districts to defray costs of health services in schools.

During Monday’s meeting — which begins at 9 a.m. at the county courthouse, 1100 Mass. — commissioners are expected to decide whether the concept merits further study.

Also scheduled for review Monday:

  • A site plan for a proposed warehouse along the east side of U.S. Highways 24-59, just north of Maple Grove Cemetery north of Lawrence.
  • A site plan to document existing conditions at Kaw Valley Metals, 1787 E. 1450 Road, just north of Lawrence.
  • Proposed rules for regulating open fires in rural areas.

Traffic: KU construction projects to affect parking, traffic

Construction projects at Kansas University will affect parking and traffic on campus beginning Monday.

The first project, a water-line rehabilitation project, will replace 4,000 feet of water lines installed in the early 1900s that are a secondary source of water for the university.

Four of the six stages in the project will affect traffic on Jayhawk Boulevard. The other two will affect traffic on Sunflower Road and 13th Street.

During construction, traffic will be restricted to one way. Detours will be provided, and parking on Jayhawk Boulevard will be suspended during the project.

The other project involves rehabilitation of the tunnels that supply steam to campus. The construction will affect parking in Lot 37, near Malott and Haworth halls. Handicap spots will remain, but reserved spots and regular permit holders will be rerouted to other lots.
