Lose the puns

To the editor:

Bill Self has yet to coach his first game as Kansas University head men’s basketball coach, yet the Journal-World seems intent on employing every possible pun that can be made of his last name. The latest example — “Proud of Self: Jayhawks add walk-on” — appeared Saturday. In the interest of helping the sports department get this out of its system, permit me to make the following suggestions for headlines during coach Self’s first season:

KU lands a top recruit: Self affirmation

KU loses a top recruit: Self denial

KU undergoes a losing streak: Self doubt

KU fans get on the coach: Self abuse

KU’s players respond with a show of support: Self confidence

KU rebounds to win its next big game: Self determination

KU’s coach continues his winning ways against Mizzou: Self mastery

KU locks up the league title and a No. 1 seed: Self control

KU’s coach is voted Coach of the Year by his league peers: Self esteem

KU wins the national title: Self adulation

KU fans know they have the best coach in the country: Self satisfaction

Feel free to use these on one condition — that after you do, NEVER, EVER use them again! Go Hawks!

Jeff Southard,
