Don’t complain

To the editor:

I guess some folks can’t ever be satisfied. I’m referring to Mike Miller’s story about the baseball game between our two young men’s high school teams. Miller spends considerable effort elaborating on the Free State coach’s complaint that there weren’t enough stands to accommodate all the spectators.

While Miller is at least aware of the current school budget crisis, he whines that it’s a “shame” the facility hasn’t been upgraded, and he suggests that the city should take this on, along with providing more port-a-potties.

I don’t think it’s a shame at all. This is a year when neighborhood schools are being closed, the county is considering providing school nurses, some academic programs such as foreign languages, music and art have been eliminated or are being reviewed and patrons of the school district have started a fund to help pay activity fees for needy students.

A quick drive around our new “separate but equal” high school shows that there are two softball fields, a track/football field with underground sprinkler, a soccer practice field, a soccer field with scoreboard, four tennis courts, a lighted baseball field with scoreboard, batting cages, two volleyball courts and an indoor aquatic center.

So I don’t think it’s a shame at all that fans have to bring their own chairs for a while. Things being the way they are, however, I wouldn’t be surprised if Mr. Miller doesn’t have upgraded stands by this time next year, and maybe even a new pissoir or two.
