Look at Wichita

To the editor:

We have many protesters who openly voice their opinions on the Kansas University campus or in Lawrence, but I have yet to see many protesting Dennis Dailey’s human sexuality class. In fact, the only one I have seen was a 40-something-year-old man holding a Bible and speaking of the evils of pornography. About a week ago, in comparison, there was a large antiabortion display with both supporters and opponents civilly discussing their opinions.

For Susan Wagle to try to change the curriculum of our school, ignoring the processes of our Student Senate, public protest and university institutions designed to handle such issues is an utter disregard for our capacity as individuals to deal with local issues. I agree with state Sen. Mark Buhler, our Lawrence representative, that Wagle’s approach is horrible policy. While I live in Lawrence, I am originally from her district in Wichita.

Instead of crusading against Dennis Dailey’s human sexuality class, she should take a look at her own constituents. Wichita should be a major metropolitan area, but with the need for more employers and an aging downtown area, it will never become such. With a state senator who is more concerned about a class that she has never taken, in a city where she does not live, which targets an age group far younger than her own, this state will never make more progress than being known as the place where both evolution and sexuality are too taboo to be spoken of in public.
