Elwell bright spot for LHS tennis
Topeka — Lawrence High’s tennis squad finished 11th out of 14 schools Wednesday at the Topeka West Invitational at Kossover Tennis Center.
Senior Scott Elwell was the bright spot for the Lions, placing first in singles. Elwell beat Salina Central’s Nathan Martin, 6-2, 6-3, in what LHS coach Dick Wedel called “the best match I have seen him play.”
Blevins takes first at O-North Invite
Olathe — Lawrence High golfer Zach Blevins shot a 76, good for first place Wednesday at the 13-team Olathe North Invitational at Prairie Highlands.
The Lions finished fourth in the team standings at 334; Blue Valley Northwest won the team title at 315.
The Lions travel today to Junction City.
Four local players sign
Free State High’s Bijai Jones will sign a letter of intent today to play basketball at Garden City Junior College. Oskaloosa High’s Kyle Kelsay will sign a national letter of intent for basketball with Avila (Mo.) College today. Wellsville High’s Kyle Patton has signed a wrestling tender with Colby Community College. Free State High soccer player Cameron Baumchen has signed a national letter of intent with Kansas City Community College.
SM East stymies Free State in soccer
Prairie Village — Free State High suffered its third straight defeat, losing 6-0 Wednesday against Shawnee Mission East.
“We had more energy than we had on Monday,” FSHS coach Jason Pendleton said, “but it wasn’t enough to overcome Shawnee Mission East’s scoring.”
The Firebirds (5-8) travel to Topeka Friday to play Washburn Rural.
