Firebirds sweep SM South

? Free State High’s softball team swept Shawnee Mission South, 3-1 and 3-2, in a twinbill Thursday at 3&2 fields.

Felicia Freeman was the winning pitcher in both games, starting and allowing five hits in the opener, then winning in relief of Ashley Wagner in the second game.

Emily Leiker, Meika Potter, Dacia Sprow and Jamie Stanclift each had a hit in the opener; Sprow smacking a double.

Free State scored twice in the seventh to win the second game, responding after a bases loaded, one-out rally ended on a double play in the sixth. Leiker hit a two-out single in the seventh to score Chloe Hall, then scored after a South throwing error.

Wagner went 2-3; Leiker scored two runs.

“I was thrilled today,” Free State coach Pam Pine said. “We had a good talk yesterday about how we were halfway through the season and needed to get some confidence under our belt.”

Free State, 4-8, will meet SM North at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Free State and travel to Olathe South Wednesday for the continuation of a game washed earlier this season.
