Habitat help

To the editor:

A tenet of our community is supporting those people who try to help themselves. Habitat for Humanity volunteers demonstrate that commitment every day.

Recently 20 college students from Shippensburg University, Shippensburg, Pa., and Loyola University, Chicago, spent their spring vacations in Lawrence working with local Habitat volunteers and prospective homeowners building high-quality, affordable homes. While in our community, they attended a thrilling Kansas University baseball game and were guests of Rob Phillips, owner of the Eldridge Hotel, and Kate Kelley, Days Inn. Meals and other assistance were provided by Lawrence’s Covenant Churches.

Our success in helping people become homeowners is dependent on the assistance of our neighbors. Rob Phillips, Kate Kelley, and the Covenant Church members typify Lawrence’s community spirit.
