Two officers, resident shot in Kansas City, Kan.

Two police officers and a child were shot Wednesday night in the northeast part of the city, authorities said.

The officers were responding to a domestic disturbance call around 6:20 p.m. when one of the officers was shot in both legs and another was shot in the buttocks.

The officers were listed in critical and stable condition at KU Med, said Carol Zugecic, a police communications supervisor.

The child was shot in the leg and her condition was not immediately known, Zugecic said.

The names of the injured were not immediately available.

A suspect was in custody, Zugecic said. She said she did not know what led to the shooting.

Roundabouts removed but likely will be replaced

Two long-standing “temporary” roundabouts on Harvard Road in west Lawrence were removed Tuesday by city crews, but permanent replacements are on the way.

Public Works Director Chuck Soules said the roundabouts, at Goldfield Street and Grove Drive, were removed to make way for street maintenance.

He said that in April officials would present the neighborhood and the Lawrence City Commission with a plan for permanent replacements, to cost up to $150,000 each.

Soules said the temporary traffic-calming circles didn’t entirely do their jobs — sharp drivers still could squeeze through intersections at high speeds — but the new ones would be designed to be more effective.

“I think the neighborhood overall would like to see traffic-calming devices,” he said.

County deadline nears for advance voting

Time is nearly up for anyone participating in advance voting for Tuesday’s general election.

The Douglas County Clerk’s Office will be open for advance voting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Friday, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday and 8 a.m. to noon Monday.

As of Tuesday, a total of 1,321 advance voting ballots had been mailed out and 469 had been returned, County Clerk Patty Jaimes said. Another 339 people had voted at the clerk’s office.

Two years ago during the general election, 967 people participated in advance voting, Jaimes said.

There are 55,490 registered voters in the county, Jaimes said.
