Champagne taste?

To the editor:

Can someone please explain to me why we are being asked to finance a bond issue that will cover basic maintenance costs for several schools? Isn’t this something that should be included in the budget every year? Loose window trim requires a nail or screw, not a new building! Am I eligible for money from my neighbors if I don’t keep up with maintenance on my home and it starts falling apart?

I think not!

I agree that there are numerous reasons to improve our schools here in Lawrence, but I don’t agree that this bond issue addresses the real underlying problems of champagne tastes on a beer budget. We need to focus on education, not having the prettiest locker room in the league!

Ask teachers and administrators at Lawrence Alternative High School how to get along on a shoestring and still provide a great service. They’ve been doing it for years and deserve better surroundings than they have. I would eagerly support a bond issue to finance improving facilities for them.
