Governor urges support for U.S. troops

? Gov. Kathleen Sebelius issued a statement urging Kansans to show open support for U.S. troops, and to remain vigilant at home.

“We have over 5,000 Kansas men and women who have been sent overseas and another 7,000 on standby. I have seen and felt the great sacrifice these Kansans — both the soldiers and their families — are making today, and the powerful commitment they have made to their country.

“I hope you will join me in finding ways to express our support and gratitude toward them. Writer a letter, thank a veteran, fly a flag — do whatever it takes to show they have our support,” Sebelius said.

Sebelius said the state was increasing security “as prudent steps in a time of war.”

She said she was briefed by Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge and assured there were no specific threats to Kansas. But she said Kansans must remain prepared and vigilant.

“I call on all Kansans to be aware of their surroundings, to report suspicious activities, and to fully cooperate with law enforcement officers as they perform their important additional duties,” she said.

Security at the Capitol building was stepped up with officers searching people’s bags who were coming in the one public entrance.
