Rainy weather moves in

Cooler temperatures moved into the area Wednesday, bringing .25 of an inch of rain, 6News forecaster Ross Janssen said. Skyhawk William Winker reported .26 of an inch, Ken Blair reported .27, and Bruce Stucky reported 0.28, all in Lawrence.

Flood warnings were issued in the south-central part of the state.

Janssen said to expect more drizzle this morning, with temperatures reaching 49 degrees.

Accomplices sentenced in kidnapping conspiracy

A district court judge showed no leniency Wednesday to two men for their involvement in the kidnapping of Topekan Dale A. Miller, whose body was later found in a shallow grave near Lecompton.

Judge Paula Martin sentenced Gary Holmes, 53, to more than 13 years in prison. Attorneys for both sides were recommending he spend 10 years or less behind bars.

Curtis Callarman, 24, was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison.

Both men originally faced aggravated kidnapping charges but struck deals with prosecutors in exchange for their testimony against Michael Kesselring, the man convicted of killing Miller. Callarman pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit kidnapping. Holmes pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit kidnapping and attempted kidnapping.

Kesselring is scheduled for sentencing April 30.

Police

More missing equipment reported in Baldwin

Baldwin — Police are investigating the theft earlier this week of a dozen large aluminum aircraft wheels.

The wheels, with a total value of $2,400, were taken during the weekend from Hey Machinery Co. Inc., 1602 High St., Police Chief Mike McKenna said.

Police also are investigating the thefts of several types of tools from nearby businesses, McKenna said. Officers Wednesday were still preparing reports.

Last week, a trailer and two large riding mowers were taken from another Baldwin business, Heritage Tractor, 915 Industrial Park Road. Police were investigating to see if the thefts were connected, McKenna said.
