Former KU player injured in dogfight

Former Kansas University basketball great Isaac “Bud” Stallworth lost part of a finger Tuesday morning as he tried to break up a fight between two of his family’s pit bulls, a police spokesman said.

After he was bitten, he got a gun and fired it at the dogs, killing one of them, Lawrence Police Lt. David Cobb said. The other dog was euthanized later in the day.

“The dogs, he felt, were going to kill each other, so he got his gun,” Cobb said.

The fight happened about 7:30 a.m. at a home on Westwood Road, Cobb said.

The family had owned the dogs for about a year, Cobb said. One belonged to Stallworth’s son, and the other had been rescued from an animal shelter, he said.

Police hadn’t cited anyone on Tuesday, Cobb said.

“If there are any charges appropriate for the city attorney to bring, they will,” he said.

Stallworth was treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Stallworth couldn’t be reached for comment.

Lawrence: Carnegie proposals submitted to city

Proposals for the future use of the Carnegie Library are in, but city officials aren’t making them public yet.

They did disclose the list of applicants. Proposals came from Lawrence Public Library Study Circle, Roy Squires, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County, Lawrence Coalition on Homeless Concerns, Lawrence Junior Wrestling Club, Joan Reiber and Katie Armitage, Jan Dicker, Donita Massengill and Beth Cigler, The Agape Corp., and Lawrence Own-Your-Own.

Assistant City Manager Debbie Van Saun said the proposals have not been opened yet and probably won’t be until after a number of officials return from vacations coinciding with Kansas University’s spring break.

The library, at Ninth and Vermont streets, has been empty for more than a year since the Lawrence Arts Center vacated it.
