Rival event

To the editor:

The Journal-World editorial of Thursday, June 19, “Stirring symbol,” states that the “dedication (of the Dole Institute) will be the biggest event to hit Lawrence in many years, perhaps ever.”

It is the “perhaps ever” that I wish to challenge. This event will surely have more former presidents and other dignitaries, but let us not forget the dedication of the Roosevelt Fountain on Aug. 31, 1910, when former president Theodore Roosevelt was the speaker.

Six thousand citizens attended the ceremony, including a contingent of 500 school children waving U.S. flags. The location of the fountain at that time was the intersection of New Hampshire and Warren (Ninth) streets. The fountain’s purpose was for watering horses, and there was a livery stable nearby.

Now, thanks to Lawrence garden clubs and the city Parks and Recreation Department, the fountain stands in South Park, surrounded by beautiful pink roses, purple buddleia, and blue salvia.
