Heat index to reach 100 for Lawrence

It’s a good day for ice-cold drinks, ice cream and a cool dip in the pool — the summer heat is here.

“We’re going to be very hot and humid, with a heat index of around 100,” said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist.

Tuesday’s actual high temperature will be close to 94, Sayers said.

“It doesn’t quite meet heat advisory criteria, but it’s still warm,” he said. “Definitely caution needs to be taken.”

If you do intend to be outdoors working or exercising during the day, you should get plenty of fluid, he said.

“Just drink extra water and beware that the conditions are warm out there,” Sayers said. “It can be dangerous.”

The hottest part of the day will be in the mid-afternoon, with winds gusting 15 to 20 mph out of the south, he said.

The forecast also shows the possibility of thunderstorms developing, he said.

“I think they’re going to miss us and be to our north and to our west,” he said. “There’s a slight chance.”

However, a front will be passing through on Wednesday, bringing with it thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night, he said.

“It will provide some relief from the heat on Thursday,” he said.

The rain Lawrence has had in the last few days has brought 5.72 inches of rain for the month, which is 1.29 inches more than the average June.

“According to the U.S. drought monitor, we are not considered dry any more,” he said.
