Texas avoids elimination

Omaha, Neb. — Freshman Sam LeCure held Miami to one run over 61/3 innings and closer Huston Street retired all seven batters he faced, helping defending national champion Texas beat Miami, 5-1, Tuesday at the College World Series.

McGovern headed to Hays

Free State High graduate Nick McGovern signed a letter of intent at his home Tuesday to wrestle at Fort Hays State University.

McGovern was a two-time state placer and a four-year varsity wrestler for FSHS. Ranked among Class 6A’s top 189-pound grapplers this season, McGovern won the Sunflower League crown and finished fourth at the state tournament, ending his season with a 29-10 record.

Madrid acquires Beckham

Madrid, Spain — English soccer star David Beckham was traded Tuesday to Real Madrid by Manchester United for a $41 million transfer fee.

The Premier League champions said the deal would be finalized in July.

The England captain and midfielder left London Tuesday for a promotional tour of Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand.

Beckham, a 13-year veteran with Manchester United, appeared headed to Barcelona, Real Madrid’s archrival, when Joan Laporta announced he reached a deal with United to transfer Beckham — if Laporta was elected Barcelona team president. That reportedly was a $30 million deal.

But Beckham balked at joining Barcelona.

Real Madrid, nine-time winner of the European Cup, already has several high-priced stars, including Brazil’s Ronaldo, France’s Zinedine Zidane, Portugal’s Luis Figo and Spain’s Raul Gonzalez.
