Flag fight

To the editor:

It’s hard to believe the American flag could be controversial on Flag Day 2003 in Lawrence.

But of course it’s not the flag that’s controversial, is it? Only the way it’s being displayed by Heritage Baptist Church. Neighbors would probably find floodlights a nuisance whatever 80-foot display was being illuminated. Possibly a cross would be more fitting, if a church is to be controversial?

Whether the complaining neighbors are un-American, based on their objections to floodlights, I can’t tell, but I’m more interested in whether a church’s priority is to fight for its rights or to live at peace with its neighbors.
