Opposing review

To the editor:

I attended Lawrence Community Theatre’s new production of “Kiss Me Kate” and was quite disappointed by the generally luke-warm review it received in your paper.

No mention was made of the show’s tight direction or stunning costuming. Only passing reference was made to Mia Goldsmith and Daniel Lassley, whose first-rate supporting performances should not have gone unmentioned. The characterization of the production’s choreography as somewhat simple and scenery as minimal might have led me to suspect I had not seen the show your reviewer described.

Though the review praised the script as, “bright, smart, and superbly written,” it also referred to “‘Kiss Me Kate’ and other shows of its ilk,” which I found condescending. To suggest that Sarah Young’s rich and well-modulated voice was a “problem” on any level is an injustice.

Lawrence audiences don’t have to hope that next season can “deliver the promise of ‘Kiss me Kate'” to see a classic musical superbly executed. The time to go to LCT is now.
