Concert to pay tribute to veterans, Flag Day

The Lawrence City Band’s second summer concert, at 8 p.m. today at the South Park gazebo, salutes veterans and Flag Day.

Robert Foster will conduct the band through a show that includes patriotic tunes as well as the premier performance of the “Lawrence Sesquicentennial March,” composed by Foster and dedicated to the memory of former city band director William L. Kelly.

The program will feature clarinet soloist J.D. Parr. and Bob Newton as narrator.

Other program highlights: “The Star-Spangled Banner;” “Eagle Squadron,” by Kenneth Alford; “The Ramparts” by J. Clifton Williams; “In the Miller Mood;” highlights from “South Pacific,” by Rodgers and Hammerstein; “Flight of the Bumblebee;” “Clarinet Polka,” with Parr on clarinet; “A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody,” by Irving Berlin; “Symphonic Marches,” by Richard Rodgers.

Lawrence resident admits to drug charges

Kansas City, Kan. — A Lawrence man has pleaded guilty to federal drug and weapons charges.

Jeremiah Davis, 28, will be sentenced Aug. 25 by Judge John W. Lungstrum for possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and one count of possessing a revolver after being convicted of domestic violence.

The charges stemmed from incidents Feb. 26 and 27 when Lawrence Police purchased crack cocaine from Davis at his Pinehaven Court residence, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. In addition to the drugs and drug paraphernalia found at the residence, police also found a loaded revolver at the residence.

Davis, who entered his plea Monday, could be sentenced to a maximum of 40 years in federal prison without parole for possession of crack and a maximum of 10 years for possession of a firearm.

KU center honors graduating officers

The Kansas University Law Enforcement Training Center recently honored 41 new officers at a graduation ceremony.

The graduates completed a 14-week basic training program at the Reno County center. They received certificates for course completion and Kansas law enforcement certification from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Commission.

Area graduates are Brian J. Ferguson, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office; Adam Sorell, Wellsville Police Department; and Shannon Marie Inman, Leavenworth Police Department.

Barbecue to benefit Boys and Girls Club

The second annual Big Pig community barbecue to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday on the grounds of Meadowbrook Apartments, 15th Street and Crestline Drive.

Gates open at 5 p.m. The buffet starts at 6 p.m., followed by a live auction at 6:30 p.m. and music by Dr. Zhivegas at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person and may be purchased at the club’s main site, 1520 Haskell Ave., the five American Family Insurance offices and both Hy-Vee Food & Drug Stores in Lawrence. Group discounts are available.

Lawrence cooks are people’s BBQ champs

McLouth — A Kansas City, Kan., barbecue team was proclaimed grand champion during Saturday’s annual BBQ Blowout contest at Prairie Park.

Mike Castenada and Pig Newton received a $1,000 prize and the opportunity to compete in the American Royal Invitational Championship and the Jack Daniels World Championship Barbecue Contest later this year.

Reserve champion honors went to Dan Hipsher and Daniel’s BBQ in Tonganoxie. The prize was $500.

People’s Choice winners were Curtis Oroke and Hempville Smokers, of Lawrence, and Jamie DePriest of Fat Boys BBQ, of McLouth.
